Try Tableau Pulse Enhanced Q&A

Try AI is a 60-day trial of Tableau Pulse enhanced Q&A (Discover) for existing Tableau Cloud sites. With enhanced Q&A, your users have a conversational way to explore groups of metrics and get insights. During the trial, there’s no limit to the number of questions that your users can ask. For more information about Discover, see Ask Questions and Discover Insights in Tableau Pulse.

Outside of the 60-day trial, enhanced Q&A requires a Tableau+ license edition. After the trial ends, contact your sales representative to purchase a Tableau+ license edition and give your users continued access.

Try AI is the only way to test enhanced Q&A on an existing Tableau site. Try AI doesn't provide access to other AI in Tableau features, such as Tableau Agent in web authoring or Tableau Prep. The only way to test those AI in Tableau features is with a trial of a new Tableau Cloud site. There isn’t a way to test those features on an existing Tableau site. For more information, see Turn on AI in Tableau with a Tableau Cloud new site trial.

The two additional AI in Tableau features for Tableau Pulse are insight summaries and semantic matching when asking questions. These features are available without a Tableau+ license edition, so you don’t need Try AI to turn them on.

Note: Enhanced Q&A (Discover) is being renamed to Tableau Agent in Pulse. The name change aligns Tableau Pulse enhanced Q&A with other Tableau Agent features, but the functionality of enhanced Q&A isn’t changing. You'll see the name change in upcoming releases.

How AI in Tableau protects your data

Enhanced Q&A (Discover) is built on top of the Salesforce Einstein Trust Layer, which keeps your data secure. Additionally, enhanced Q&A uses Azure OpenAI to ensure data residency and geoscaling. The Einstein Trust Layer detects sensitive data such as personally identifiable information (PII) and automatically masks that PII before sending prompts to the LLM. Your data isn't retained by the LLM provider or used to train the LLM. To learn more about how AI in Tableau secures your data, see AI in Tableau and Data Usage, AI in Tableau and Trust, and AI in Tableau and the Einstein Trust Layer.

The Einstein Trust Layer collects prompt and response data as well as feedback data. This information is stored securely in Salesforce Data 360 for audit purposes but isn’t shared with the LLM provider. To learn about the data that the Einstein Trust Layer collects, see About Generative AI Audit and Feedback Data(Link opens in a new window).

Start your trial of enhanced Q&A (Discover)

Before starting the trial, make sure that Tableau Pulse is already set up on your site. To learn how to turn on Tableau Pulse, see Set Up Your Site for Tableau Pulse.

There’s no way to pause the trial after it starts. Even if you turn off enhanced Q&A or turn off Tableau Pulse entirely, the trial continues to run.

  1. On the Tableau Cloud navigation panel, select Settings.
  2. Under AI in Tableau > Try AI, select Start Free Trial. Starting the trial also turns on enhanced Q&A for your site.
  3. At the top of the settings page, select Save.

There's no further configuration required for the trial. AI in Tableau is powered by Einstein generative AI in Salesforce, but you don’t need to connect your Tableau site to Salesforce for the duration of the trial. The trial automatically connects to a shared Salesforce org, which is the same means that powers Tableau Pulse insight summaries.

Next steps after the trial ends

Users lose access to enhanced Q&A (Discover) when the trial ends. If users interact with old email digests that have links to enhanced Q&A, those links will no longer launch the Q&A experience. During the trial, when enhanced Q&A answers a question, it automatically creates metrics and suggests that users follow those metrics. Users do retain access to any metrics that are created during the trial.

You can purchase a Tableau+ license edition to give your users continued access to enhanced Q&A . If you purchase a Tableau+ license edition, you’ll be provisioned with a dedicated Salesforce org to power enhanced Q&A. At that point, you’ll connect your Tableau site to your dedicated Salesforce org. For information about setting up your Salesforce org and connecting it to Tableau after the trial, see Configure Tableau Cloud sites for AI.

Limit the trial to specific user groups (optional)

By default, enhanced Q&A (Discover) is available for all users on your site. If you want only a subset of your users to be able to test enhanced Q&A, limit access to specific user groups.

  1. On the Tableau Cloud navigation panel, select Settings.
  2. Under AI in Tableau > AI Settings by Feature, select the Actions (...) menu for Tableau Pulse: Uses Pulse Discover for an in-depth, integrated exploration of groups of metrics and insights.
  3. Select User Access.
  4. Select the user groups to limit access to, then select Apply.
  5. At the top of the settings page, select Save.

Onboard your users
