Step 6: Connect, Transform, and Harmonize Data in Data Cloud
Who does this step? Any user with a Data Cloud Architect permission set.
About this step: Tableau Next relies on data in Data Cloud. Before you can use all the functionality in Tableau Next, you need data to work with. However, these steps don't need to be taken as part of setup.
Note: Data Cloud is a complex, powerful product in its own right. Because Data Cloud and Tableau Next can't function without data in Data Cloud, the general steps for adding data to Data Cloud are listed. The information on this page is provided at a high level and isn't intended to be sufficient for implementation. Refer to the more detailed documentation for complete details and steps.
Bring in data to Data Cloud
Why: To get started with Data Cloud, you connect a data source. During data ingestion, data is brought into Data Cloud in its original form and stored in a data lake object (DLO).
Set up Data Model Objects (DMOs)
Why: Create, view, and manage data model objects (DMOs). DMOs are fundamental to Data Cloud. Familiarize yourself with the definitions, concepts, and resources related to DMOs before creating or working with them.
Create a semantic model
Why: Tableau Semantics is a new Data Cloud layer, where you define, govern, and query all your business metrics. Tableau Semantics operates on top of Data Cloud’s data sources and powers all consumption experiences that source data from Data Cloud. It’s applied on top of all the data sources you connect or ingest into Data Cloud and serves as a single source of truth for all your consumption layers.
-
In Data Cloud, on the Semantic Layer tab, click New Model.
-
Select Start with a New Model and then click Next.
-
Select the data objects for your semantic model.
-
Deselect any fields you don't want to include in the semantic model.
-
Click Next and then enter the model information.
-
Give the model a descriptive name and an API name, and enter an optional description. You can’t change the API name after the model is created.
-
Click Create.
-
After your model is created, you can add data objects and change the definitions.

Enable Analytics Agent Readiness
Why: Optional, but required for Concierge. Perform this task to verify your model's readiness and mark it as mature and ready for use by the Analytics Agent.
-
In Data Cloud, on the Semantic Layer tab, select the relevant semantic model by clicking its name.
-
In the Semantic Model Builder, click the clipboard icon
. The Analytics Agent Readiness screen opens.
-
Read each item on the checklist. Based on your own judgment, check the box for each item to confirm that the semantic model meets the recommended criteria.
-
Only after all boxes are checked, the Enable button activates.
-
The Semantic Model Builder displays a tool tip indicating that an Analytics Agent is allowed to answer questions based on this semantic model.

You’re done!
Congratulations! You've brought data into Data Cloud, set up a Data Model Object, and created a semantic model to add business context to your data.
