About Tableau Server and the pgvector extension in PostgreSQL
Beginning with version 2026.3.0, Tableau Server installs services that require an open-source PostgreSQL extension called the pgvector extension. This extension must be installed at the operating system level of the computer running PostgreSQL, and, if present, is enabled in PostgreSQ by the Tableau Administration Service during install or upgrade. This topic outlines what steps, if any, you need to take when installing or upgrading Tableau Server.
General guidelines for installing or upgrading Tableau Server
In most install or upgrade scenarios, no extra steps or actions are required. The only time you will need to take special actions are:
-
Fresh installs or upgrades with external repositories that use Azure or a standalone PostgreSQL installation for the external repository:
-
Using Azure for the external repository
If using Azure, you need to make sure the pgvector extension is available at the operationg system level and accessible to the PostgreSQL server’s allowlist before installing Tableau Server. For more information, see the documentation in the pgvector open source GitHub repository(Link opens in a new window) and the Azure documentation for more details.
or
-
Using a stand-alone instance of PostreSQL for the external repository
If using a standalone external repository, the steps depend on what type and version of PostgreSQL you have. Consult the documentation for your particular flavor of PostgreSQL and the documentation in the pgvector open source GitHub repository(Link opens in a new window).
-
All other install and upgrade scenarios need no extra steps. Follow the normal steps for your enterprise:
