Google Analytics 4

Note: Tableau adheres to Google’s API Services User Data Policy and Limited Use Requirements when using or transferring information from Google APIs to other apps.

This article describes how to connect Tableau to Google Analytics 4 and set up the data source.

Before you begin

Before you begin, gather this connection information:

  • Google Analytics email address and password

Recommendation

Set up a custom OAuth Client to use your company's IT policies

You can fully control your OAuth configuration according to your own IT policies with a custom OAuth client. The option to use your own OAuth client frees you from being tied to Tableau release cycles and Tableau’s OAuth client rotation schedule. For information on how to configure your own OAuth client see, Configure custom OAuth for a site.

Make the connection and set up the data source

  1. Start Tableau and under Connect, select Google Analytics 4 from the list of Additional Connectors.
  2. Select Install and Restart Tableau to install the connector.
  3. After Tableau restarts, under Connect, select Google Analytics 4 from the list of Installed Connectors.
  4. Sign in with your Google email address and password.
  5. Check the permission box to allow Tableau to See and download your Google Analytics data.
  6. Follow the steps in the Google Analytics 4 dialog window to complete the connection.
  1. Select an Account and Property.
  2. InDate Range, select a default date range or specific dates.
  3. The date range can be Fixed Start and End Dates, relative to a Fixed Start Date, or Relative to Refresh Date (that is, the current date on which the connection is created or refreshed).

  4. Add dimensions and metrics (measures).

Note: Some dimensions and measures can’t be used together. For more information, see Dimensions & Metrics Reference Guide on the Google developer website.

  5. Review your connection attributes and select Connect.
  1. (Optional) On the Data Source page, select the default data source name at the top of the page, and then enter a unique data source name for use in Tableau.

For example, use a data source naming convention that helps other users of the data source figure out which data source to connect to.

  2. Select the Sheet tab to start your analysis. After you select the sheet tab, Tableau imports the data by creating an extract.

Note: Tableau only supports extracts for Google Analytics 4. You can update the data by refreshing the extract. For more information, see Extract Your Data.
