Get Started with Tableau Knowledge
Use this guide to get up and running with Tableau Knowledge. The procedures explained in this guide take you through the initial setup steps and explain how to create your first knowledge graph.
Note: Tableau Knowledge is currently available in English only.
Licensing and roles
Tableau Knowledge is available on Tableau Cloud+ and Tableau+.
Your Tableau Cloud site role determines the actions that you can perform:
| Task | Required Tableau Cloud site role |
|---|---|
| Create, change, or delete a knowledge graph | Tableau Cloud Site Administrator Creator, Tableau Cloud Site Administrator Explorer, and Tableau Cloud Creator |
| Query a knowledge graph as a user or through an agent | Tableau Cloud Explorer or Tableau Cloud Viewer |
Note: If a user doesn’t have view permissions for a specified asset, it doesn’t appear on their knowledge graph.

At the top of the Settings page, Save your settings.
-
Tableau Knowledge tab appears in the left navigation pane.
Open the Tableau Knowledge Home page
To open the Tableau Knowledge Home page, click Tableau Knowledge in the left navigation pane. If it is not there, see Turn on Tableau Knowledge. Tableau Knowledge opens in a new window. To return to Tableau Cloud, click the Return to Tableau Cloud button at the bottom of the page.
Explore the Tableau Knowledge Home page
When you open the Tableau Knowledge Home page, you see an overview of the health of your graphs. The metrics are relevant only to the selected Knowledge Graph. The dashboard shows no data if you haven't created or activated a graph yet.
This dashboard has several sections:
-
Knowledge Graph Selector—the selector shows up to 5 knowledge graphs. The default knowledge graph is first. Selecting a graph changes the rest of the page to be relevant for the graph selected. Only one knowledge graph can be the default knowledge graph. For more information, see Default knowledge graph.
Note: Only the nodes you have permission to view appear in the knowledge graph.
-
Metrics—in the metrics section, you find these data points:
-
Context Coverage—the percentage of entities that have minimum business context for an AI agent to interpret and answer questions about them.
-
Total Nodes—the total number of nodes included in the graph.
-
Relationships—the total number of edges included in the graph across all nodes in the graph.
-
Issues—the number of issues raised for the Knowledge Graph. Use the Tableau Agent for Knowledge for suggestions or the Chat menu to fix these issues and to keep this number as low as possible. For more information, see Tableau Agent for Knowledge.
-
-
Health Score—a percentage that indicates how healthy your knowledge graph is. The higher this number is, the better. The system calculates this percentage by averaging the completion rate of each item in the Quality Scorecard section.
-
Quality Scorecard—provides a breakdown of the health score. These metrics compose the health score:
-
Certification—published data sources require review and certification, so they’re trusted. This graph indicates the percentage of certified sources.
-
Ownership—every entity type requires an owner. The graph represents the percentage of owned assets.
-
Descriptions—when entities have descriptions, agents understand what it is for. This graph represents the percentage of nodes that have descriptions.
-
Connected Nodes—orphaned nodes confuse agents, while connected nodes help agents understand relationships between nodes. The graph represents the percentage of connected nodes.
-
-
Recommended Actions—an AI-generated list of suggestions proposed by the Tableau Agent for Knowledge, for improving your knowledge graph performance. Click any of the buttons to view the issue requiring your attention.
Create your first knowledge graph

Refresh the Knowledge Graphs page. Your new knowledge graph appears. Wait until it’s ready. After it’s ready, proceed to the next step: Set the knowledge graph as default.
Set the knowledge graph as default
As you only have one graph created, make the graph your default knowledge graph. For more information, see Default knowledge graph.
Without setting a default knowledge graph, you see an error message. To remove it, set the knowledge graph as default.
To set the knowledge graph as default:
-
From the Tableau Knowledge Home page, click Manage Graphs.
-
The page shows a tile with the knowledge graph that you created.
-
On that tile, click the More menu (3 vertical dots).
-
Select Set as default.
-
Confirm that from the Manage Graphs page, the knowledge graph tile shows a Default icon.
Navigate around your knowledge graph
The graph and explorer views allow you to navigate the knowledge graph and also to search for a specific node or drill down into the graph and explore individual nodes.
When in Graph View
- To search for a node:
- From the search bar, enter the name of a node. As you type, the search results appear. Click on one, and jump straight to the node.
- To zoom in:
- From the navigation bar, click the + icon.
- To zoom out:
- From the navigation bar, click the - icon.
- To drill down:
- Double-click on a node.
When in Explorer View
- To explore the graph:

- To search for a node:
- From the search bar, enter the name of a node. As you type, the search results appear. Click on one, and jump straight to the node.
Add global business preferences
Global business preferences are applicable to the entire knowledge graph. Adding global business preferences allows agents to:
- Understand how data is used across the organization
- Clarify specific terminology
- Align and explain principles the company works
You can either build a business preference by creating a single natural language instruction, or you can upload a file with your business preferences. For every preference in the file, Tableau Knowledge generates a business preference.
If you are using a file, adhere to the following guidelines:
- Separate each business preference with a blank line—one preference per paragraph.
- Save the file in any of the supported formats: PDF, DOCX, TXT, MD, or CSV.
To add a global business preference:
-
From Tableau Knowledge, click Manage Graphs in the left-side navigation menu.
-
Click the Add + button.
-
Select Add Business Preferences.
-
Choose how you want to proceed. You can either select Add Preference to add a single instruction, or you can select Upload File to upload a preferences file.
-
If you chose, Add Preference, fill in the fields as follows:
-
Title- you can give the business preference a title for easier identification.
-
Scope - this field cannot be changed. It should say All entities (global)
-
Preference - add instructions for the agent. For example “When asking about Revenue, always sum the TOTAL_AMOUNT.”
Save your preferences.
-
-
If you chose Upload a Document:
-
Drag and drop a file into the upload window or use the Browse button to locate your file.
-
Fill in the fields as follows:
-
Title - you can give the business preference a title for easier identification.
-
Scope - do not change, it should say All entities (global)
-
Save your preferences.
-
Connect your knowledge graph to Tableau Model Context Protocol (MCP)
Connecting your knowledge graph to the Tableau MCP server enables Tableau Agent and other agents to query your knowledge graph. To get started with a Tableau MCP server, read the Getting Started(Link opens in a new window) guide.
