Step 4: Connect to the Kubernetes Cluster

You will need to Install the command line tool kubectl on your laptop or workstation (not the cluster node). The kubectl tool will enable communication between the workstation it is installed on and the cluster node by using the kubeConfig file that you received from the Tableau team.

  1. To install kubectl, follow the instructions for your OS:

  2. The path that is used by kubectl to access the configuration file are:

    • Linux/macOS: ~/.kube/config

    • Windows: %USERPROFILE%\.kube\config

  3. (Optional) Make a backup of the existing kubeConfig file if it exists. For example on the Linux OS:

    cp ~/.kube/config ~/.kube/config.backup
  4. Merge or overwrite the existing kubeConfig file with the one provided by Tableau. This example overwrites the file:

    cp ~/Downloads/<kube-config-name>.yaml ~/.kube/config
  5. Validate the configuration is correct by logging in to the cluster, get a list of clusters and selecting a cluster.

    kubectl config get-contexts
    kubectl config use-context $CONTEXT_NAME
  6. Note: $CONTEXT is the name of the cluster.
